Tom Hiddleston Talks Thor: The Dark World

No Comments, Uncategorized, by .

tom-hiddleston-thor-the-dark-world-slice

Not to be upstaged by potential villainous newcomer, Christopher Eccleston, Tom Hiddleston recently commented on his own villain, Loki, in the upcoming Marvel sequel, Thor:?The Dark World. ? After starring as the trickster in both Thor and The Avengers, Hiddleston talks at length about the character?s complexity, how he feels about director Alan Taylor?s vision for Thor 2 and what fans can expect to see in the sequel.? Hit the jump to see what Hiddleston has to say.

Also starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Zachary Levi, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, Ray Stevenson, Jaimie Alexander, Stellan Skarsgard and Kat Dennings, Thor: The Dark World will open November 8th, 2013.

tom-hiddleston-thor-the-dark-worldAfter receiving his fan award for ?Hottest Actor? from the Total Film Hotlist Awards (via CBM), Hiddleston talked in depth about playing Loki in Thor: The Dark World.? Here?s a sample of what he had to say (for the full interview, head over to Total Film):

On the topic of Loki?s mental state:

?Underneath the steely cold veneer of his trickster charm is a certain vulnerability and sensitivity ? the wounded fragility of an outcast brother and son. His mind IS a box of cats though! But I love him.?

Hiddleston also talks about the fun of playing the Asgardian antagonist:

?The best thing about being Loki is that he is my diametric opposite. Physically, he is a photo negative of who I am. Loki is dark and pale, and I am light and fair. Also spiritually I am not much like him either. Yet I feel an incredible freedom in playing him.

?He is a combination of mercurial intellectual ability, emotional ambiguity, rakish charm, charisma and provocative wit. He has a wicked inclination to mischief, underneath which is a well of spiritual pain. Both these aspects are central to his depth as a character: his unashamed and perverse delight in creating chaos; and his capacity for raw emotional expression.

?And ? as my American friends tell me ? he?s kind of a badass! He?s one of the richest, most rewarding, most fun characters I?ve ever played.?

Finally, Hiddleston comments on what fans can expect fromThor: The Dark World:

?I don?t want to give too much away. But I can guarantee that you won?t be disappointed. Alan Taylor?s vision of Thor 2 is utterly brilliant. The journey continues in the most epic dimension and proportion imaginable. It?s very, very exciting.?

Empower and encourage, not one or the other. ? writemegirl online

No Comments, Uncategorized, by .

Their noses wrinkled, eyes squinted, mouths puckered as if they?d just licked the salt, drank the shot of tequila, and sucked a sour lemon. They despised the word empower because they?d heard it for years in the workforce. ?

?We should encourage,? they said. ?We?should encourage others to succeed, never quit, to go for what they want.??

?Okay,? I replied, ?consider the proverb ?Give a man a fish and feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.? I can encourage anyone to fish, but if they don?t have the resources to learn how, they can?t feed themselves. I empower them by teaching them how to fish and obtain the resources they need; thereby, enabling them to feed themselves. During the learning process, I?m encouraging each step of the way. We should do both.?

*crickets chirping*

When we speak of empowering people, we give them authority or power to do something, or enable them to do something. By giving someone a rod and reel, a little bait, and instructions on how to fish, we?re enabling them to feed themselves . . . they have authority and power to do something about their circumstances.

Encouragement, on the other hand, provides hope or confidence, or support and advice to someone. In essence, we?re ?encouraging results.? ?While they?re learning to fish, we encourage them to continue on, imparting confidence that they can do it.

Throughout my career, I?ve considered my role as a technical trainer and professional educator to be that of a conduit who provides the tools and information learners need, whether I?m teaching adults or teenagers. I help to empower people with knowledge and the necessary skills, and encourage them to apply what they?ve learned to the job or their studies.

I see encouragement as a complement to empowerment, knowing that the two go hand-in-hand.

Empower or encourage? I say we do both.

What’s with ‘Spider-Man’ post-credits scene?

No Comments, Uncategorized, by .

Columbia Pictures

Dr. Curt Connors (aka The Lizard) in the New York sewers. He is visited by a mysterious man who could be Norman Osborn in a scene during the end credits.

By Cody Delistraty

Spoiler warning: Don’t read this if you don’t want spoilers for “The Amazing Spider-Man” and possibly its sequel.

Checking out “The Amazing Spider-Man” this week? Don’t leave?the theater?right after the end credits start to roll. If you do, you’ll miss?a tantalizingly brief scene?that hints at questions the movie left unanswered.

In the scene, Dr. Curt Connors (aka The Lizard) sits alone in a cell. Lightning flashes and a cloaked man appears between two slivers of moonlight.

?Did you tell him about his father?? the mysterious man asks Connors.

Connors says that he told young Peter nothing about his father, Richard Parker, and nobly pleads that Peter be left alone. The shrouded man quickly disappears with another strike of lightning.

The scene is brief, but there may be some clues.

First, it?s impossible to know who the second?man is. Connors, once a friend of Peter Parker’s mysteriously vanished parents,?was recently a giant lizard, so it?s hard to trust the soundness of his mental health.?Perhaps he imagined the visitor??Maybe it?s a manifestation of the Hyde-like voice inside his head that pushes him to wreak havoc and do evil? Yet, maybe, it?s a real, in-the-flesh person?

When the?Huffington Post?asked whether the man is Norman Osborn, the head of Oscorp who becomes the Green Goblin in Sam Raimi?s ?Spider-Man,? director Marc Webb played coy.

?It?s intentionally mysterious, and I invite speculation,? he told the?Huffington Post.

He added, ?I like this idea that Oscorp is this Tower of Babel. And every crazy thing in the universe somehow relates to Oscorp.?

Some critics, like Screenrant?s Kofi Outlaw, believe Connors’ visitor could imply that The Sinister Six, a group of mad-scientists-turned-monsters, may make their way into ?Amazing Spider-Man? sequels.

But, this seems unlikely. ?Amazing? turned out strikingly similar to Raimi?s 2002 ?Spider-Man,” so there?s little reason to think that a sequel will suddenly diverge and add a slew of villains.

Rhys Ifans, the Welsh actor who plays Connors, seems to support the theory that the man is Osborn when he carefully?explains the final scene.

?Connors is sent to an asylum ? and he?s visited by, shall we say, a representative from Oscorp,? he told MTV.

In March, movie blog CinemaBlend posted an interview with director Marc Webb?filmed at WonderCon in California, and in it, Webb suggests that the film ties in to a future sequel. Does this quick scene, then,?mean the Green Goblin (played by Willem Dafoe in the 2002 Tobey Maguire version) will be the villain for the second film? Fans will find out when the sequel comes to theaters in 2014.

What do you make of this mysterious scene? Share your thoughts on?our Facebook page.?

WikiLeaks targets Syria with ‘embarrassing’ trove (+video)

This latest batch of leaks totals some 2.4 million e-mails, which WikiLeaks says will be embarrassing to both the regime of Bashar al-Assad?and the regime?s opponents, including Western countries.

So far, the only information released has to do with the Italian defense giant Finmeccanica, which?is reported to have provided communications equipment and expertise about helicopters to the Syrian military and police.

Finmeccanica (which is 30 percent owned by the Italian government and is also one of Britain’s largest defense suppliers) says it is investigating the authenticity of the e-mails before commenting.?

WikiLeaks acknowledges that some of the e-mails can’t be verified. They involve 680 different Internet domains, 678,752?different e-mail senders, 1,082,447 different e-mail recipients, and several different languages, including Arabic and Russian.

Published by the Italian news magazine L’Espresso, one of WikiLeaks’ media partners, e-mails appear to show that a subsidiary of Finmeccanica was selling radio equipment to Syria as recently as two months ago ? at the same time that the European Union was imposing an embargo on the regime, specifically prohibiting the sale of weapons and equipment that could be used in the fight against the Syrian opposition.

In a statement Thursday, WikiLeaks said the Syria-related entities or domain names from which the e-mails were obtained include the Ministries of Presidential Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Finance, Information, Transport, and Culture.

“The material is embarrassing to Syria, but it is also embarrassing to Syria?s opponents,? WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said, without elaborating, through WikiLeaks spokeswoman Sarah Harrison. ?It helps us not merely to criticize one group or another, but to understand their interests, actions and thoughts. It is only through understanding this conflict that we can hope to resolve it.”

According to the organization, the range of information in the e-mails ?extends from the intimate correspondence of the most senior Baath party figures to records of financial transfers sent from Syrian ministries to other nations.?

IRL: Fujifilm X-Pro1, Garmin Edge 200 and Otterbox’s Universal Defender case, revisited

No Comments, Uncategorized, by .
Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we’re using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

If we’ve never explained where the idea for IRL came from, now might be as good a time as any. Our own Tim Stevens, a car nut in his own right and a one-time auto editor for Engadget, wanted to test gadgets the way auto mags do vehicles. That is to say, on an ongoing basis, over a long period of time. That mission rings particularly true this week: Jon’s taken hundreds of test shots with Fujifilm’s X-Pro1, Terrence has been commuting with the Garmin Edge 200 cycling monitor and Brian has owned the Otterbox Universal Defender case so long that he’s actually taking back the praise he gave in a prior IRL. All that and more after the break.

Sony’s speedy new memory cards

No Comments, Uncategorized, by .

Sony claims it’s new XQD S series memory cards are the “fastest ever.”

Based on internal testing, Sony says its forthcoming XQD S series memory cards work at up to 168Mbps, making them the fastest on the market.

How fast is that? Fast enough to handle up to 108 frames in RAW format shot in continuous mode at 10 fps. Or in relative terms, 30% faster than the fastest CompactFlash cards.

Reflecting the popularity of the Mac platform among photographers, Sony will be providing a device driver for use with compatible Thunderbolt card readers.

The new cards will be available from August in 32GB and 64GB versions. Prices will be announced closer to the release date. Purchasers will be entitled to download a free version of Sony’s File Rescue 3.2 utility for recovering accidentally deleted photos or videos.

“Sony is proud to be the first producer of XQD memory cards and the launch of the XQD S Series proves our dedication to bringing technological innovations to our customers,” said Serene Goh, assistant product manager, retail media and energy, Sony Australia. “Rest assured with its improved lightning-fast transfer speeds of up to 168 MBps, it allows photographers to get the most out of their high-end DSLRs with both photographic quantity and quality.”
